What we look for when we audit a Shopify store
These are the problems that show up most often. None of them are exotic — which is exactly why they go unnoticed for years.
A homepage title that just says "Home"
The title is the headline Google shows in results. When it's generic or truncated, you're competing for attention with a blank label. Shopify themes ship with placeholder titles and most stores never change them.
No description, so Google writes its own
With no meta description, search engines scrape an arbitrary sentence off the page — often navigation text or a cookie notice. You lose control of the one piece of copy that decides whether someone clicks.
No H1 — or three of them
The H1 tells search engines what a page is about. Many themes either omit it or apply it to a logo and a promo banner at once, leaving the actual page topic unstated.
Product images with no alt attribute
For an image-heavy store this is a large, quiet loss: photos can't surface in image search, and screen readers can't describe them. We routinely see stores where more than half the images have nothing at all.
No Product schema on product pages
Structured data is what makes price, stock status and review stars appear in search results. Without it your listing is plain text next to competitors showing all three.
RankEngine is a Shopify app in development that finds these automatically and tells you which to fix first.
